It will already be an important year with the municipality’s Centennial. The 100th Anniversary Committee wants to ensure 2014 is also a record breaker.
At today’s 100th Anniversary Committee meeting, discussion ensued on a range of possibilities that could be submitted for possible Guinness World Book of Records consideration.
These included a chain of residents holding hands around the perimeter of the City and contending for the longest ball hockey or baseball game bragging rights. Another possibility is seeing how long someone could sit atop a fire truck ladder.
“We are putting it out to the community to come up with ideas that would qualify for the record book,” says Councillor Helen Rice, Committee Chair. “The Committee wants our anniversary year to be as memorable as possible.”
Discussion also centred on having four major events, covering the seasons, as part of a year chock-full of events. This would include the Homecoming, planned for the long weekend in August, 2014. An array of ideas for activities include hot air balloon championships, a provincial curling tournament, a soap box derby, a military tattoo, a car show, a film festival, an air show, and a logging competition.
Production of a history book is already under way.
Work toward the Homecoming includes creation of a Facebook Group, Grande Prairie Homecoming 2014. A database of people interested in attending Homecoming has been established using the email address firstname.lastname@example.org.
“Excitement is already building in the community for our Centennial,” says Coun. Rice. “This is a significant milestone and we look are looking forward to having a celebration befitting of the occasion. It will be an incredible year.”

Kidsport Gets A Little More Cash – Could Go Long Way
More kids in Grande Prairie may be playing sports with the help of Kidsport Alberta.
The local chapter is getting a $2 thousand cash boost as part of a new deal with Strad Energy.
Local Kidsport Chair Kevin Mack says it will help those parents who may not be able to afford the costs of signing up a kid for hockey or soccer.
“Our goal is to get kids off the sideline by removing the financial barriers that prevent them from playing sports; I mean an active child is less likely to get into trouble.”
Last year, Kidsport Grande Prairie helped 249 kids play organized sports.
