County of Grande Prairie Unveils Cairn
At a ceremony this afternoon, County Reeve Everett McDonald unveiled a cairn commemorating the Clairmont grain elevator.
“In towns and villages throughout rural Alberta, grain elevators were at the heart of the communities,” said McDonald.
“This cairn pays homage to the perseverance and enduring prairie spirit of the people which is just as strong today as it was at the turn of the century. By placing this cairn on the site where this prairie icon stood, we are commemorating this historic structure, which played such an important role in Peace Country history.”
The Clairmont Grain Elevator, which stood from 1917 to 2005, was the first to be built in Northwestern Alberta.
“Landscapes don’t remain static, and just as the landscape has transformed and evolved, so have we,” stated McDonald. “We can be proud of the many milestones in the County we’ve reached, even in these past few months alone.”
