Support to agencies to encourage staff retention

Edmonton… The Government of Alberta is supporting contracted community-based agencies in addressing labour market pressures in the human services sector through additional funding in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Agencies contracted by Children and Youth Services to serve children, youth and families and by Seniors and Community Supports to serve adults with disabilities will receive two lump sums of $1,500 per full-time equivalent employee, with pro-rated amounts for part-time employees.

“The services provided by contracted agencies are critical for the safety and well-being of our children, youth and families,” says Yvonne Fritz, Minister of Children and Youth Services. “This funding recognizes the important supports that the skilled and dedicated agency staff provide on a daily basis.”

The two lump sums will be paid to contracted agencies in September 2011 and April 2012. The agencies will then make payments to their employees. The total cost of providing these lump sums will be up to $26.4 million each year.

“Supporting adults with disabilities is a collaborative effort between my ministry and our contracted agencies,” says Mary Anne Jablonski, Minister of Seniors and Community Supports. “We recognize and value the important work they do. That’s why we are increasing funding over the next two years to help agencies compensate their hardworking staff.”

The lump sum payments are part of the Alberta government’s ongoing efforts to support community-based agencies in addressing staffing pressures. Prior to these lump sum payments, the province had already invested over $100 million since 2005-06 to assist agencies with staff recruitment and retention.

The Alberta government is working to build a better Alberta by fostering economic growth, strengthening our health and education systems, investing in infrastructure, supporting safe and strong communities and ensuring a clean and healthy environment.
